The Revolting Rhymers Competition (“Competition”) is promoted by The Roald Dahl Literary Estate LLP (“RDLE” and "Promoter") of 5 New Street Square, London, EC4A 3TW. It is subject to the Terms and Conditions (“the Terms”) stated below. By submitting an entry, you are agreeing to be bound by the Terms. 

Terms and Conditions

Terms relating to entries

  1. Entries to the Competition may be made only by a person:
    1. who is a UK resident, and currently of primary school age;
    2. whose parent, legal guardian or teacher has ticked a box confirming consent to the entry and to having read and accepted the Terms for and on behalf of the person entering the Competition and to the use of the entry as set out in the Terms. The entrant’s parent/legal guardian/teacher must consent to the entry in order for it to be valid;
    3. who is not a child of (i) an employee or immediate family member of an employee of RDLE, its agents or advisors or (ii) other persons assisting with the Competition.
  2. For an entry to be valid, it must be completed by submitting an online entry form via revoltingrhymers.com including the parent/legal guardian/teacher's name and email address, to arrive between 00:01 on 26/09/16 and 23:59 on 21/10/16. There is no alternative method of entry.
  3. Each entry shall
    1. have a consistent rhyme scheme throughout the entirety of the poem;
    2. be between 4 and 30 lines in length;
    3. feature at least one Roald Dahl character from a Roald Dahl children’s book; and
    4. not follow the same plot or be situated in the same setting as any Roald Dahl children’s book.
  4. Entries may be submitted in the English or Welsh language. Bilingual (English/Welsh) entries will not be accepted.
  5. Each entry must not contain anything offensive or illegal, for example defamatory statements or an infringement of any third party intellectual property rights.
  6. There is no purchase necessary to enter the Competition and there is no charge to enter the Competition.
  7. In entering the Competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prize you may win. The Promoter may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the Competition and that the entry you submitted is yours.

Terms relating to judging and prizes

  1. Judging will be based on criteria preagreed by RDLE with third party partners, Mando] The judging of all entries shall take place by 23:59 on 16/12/16 (or such later date as RDLE shall determine if required due to circumstances outside the reasonable control of RDLE: please check the website at revoltingrhymers.com for details of any changes). Entrants submitting rhymes in English will be judged by Tom Fletcher and volunteers recruited by RDLE and its partners. Entrants submitting rhymes in the Welsh language will be judged by Bardd Plant Cymru (Welsh-language Children’s Laureate) Anni Llŷn and volunteers recruited by Literature Wales. RDLE reserves the right to change the judges should this prove necessary due to unavailability, illness or otherwise.
  2. The decision of the judges as which they consider the winning and runners-up entries will be final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
  3. There will be one overall winner in each of the English and Welsh language categories and nine runners-up in both languages.
  4. The prizes are as follows:

English-language category:-

  1. The top ten winning English entries will be published alongside the top four Welsh-language entries, in a standalone free ebook which will be available at most UK ebook retailers.
  2. The overall winner will receive an iPad Mini.
  3. The overall winning entry will be read and recorded on video by celebrity judge Tom Fletcher, to be broadcast on roalddahl.com and other Roald Dahl social media channels and (if requested by the partner concerned) the media channels of RDLE’s partner organisations. Should Tom Fletcher not be available for any reason, a replacement for him will be found.
  4. The overall winner will also receive:
    1. a one-year family pass to The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden;
    2. two copies of the new Revolting Rhymes paperback edition, published by Penguin Random House, one for the winner and the other for his or her school;
    3. and two complete sets of the new paperback editions of Roald Dahl’s children’s titles, published by Penguin Random House, one for the entrant and the other for his or her school;
  5. The nine best entries other than the overall winning entry will each receive (i) two complete sets of the new paperback editions of Roald Dahl’s children’s titles, published by Penguin Random House, one for the entrant and the other for his or her school; and (ii) a DVD of the Revolting Rhymes animation as featured on the BBC Christmas series produced by Magic Light Pictures.

Welsh-language category:-

  1. The top four Welsh-language entries will be published alongside the top ten winning English entries, in a standalone free ebook which will be available at most UK ebook retailers.
  2. The overall winner will receive an iPad Mini
  3. The overall winning entry in the Welsh-language will be read and recorded on video by Bardd Plant Cymru (Welsh-language Children’s Laureate) Anni Llŷn. The video will be broadcast on roalddahl.com and other Roald Dahl social media channels and (if requested by the partner concerned) the media channels of RDLE’s partner organisations. Should Anni Llŷn not be available for any reason, a replacement for her will be found.
  4. The overall winner will also receive:
    1. a one-year family pass to The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden;
    2. two copies of Cerddi Ffiaidd published by Rily, one for the winner and the other for his or her school;
    3. and two sets of the new paperback editions of Roald Dahl’s children’s titles (Welsh-language), published by Rily, one for the entrant and the other for his or her school.
  1. The three best entries other than the overall winning entry will each receive (i) two complete sets of the new paperback editions of Roald Dahl’s children’s titles (English-language), published by Penguin Random House, one for the entrant and the other for his or her school; and (ii) a DVD of the Revolting Rhymes animation as featured on the BBC Christmas series produced by Magic Light Pictures.

 

  1. RDLE shall notify the top ten English and top four Welsh-language entries of the Competition by 19/12/16 using the email addresses or postal addresses submitted by the relevant entrants at the time of entry. RDLE will contact the winners to arrange delivery of the prize(s). Prizes that can be dispatched will be dispatched by post to the address provided within 30 days of the conclusion of the judging or 30 days of the receipt by RDLE of address details (should these have been requested), whichever is later.
  2. A list of the names and counties of each prize winner may be obtained up to 60 days after the relevant judging by sending a signed hand-written request (along with a stamped self-addressed envelope) marked with the words “Winners details - Revolting Rhymers Competition” addressed to RDLE at 118 Seymour Place, London, W1H 1NP.
  3. The Promoter reserves the right to replace prizes with alternative prizes if circumstances beyond the Promoter's control make it necessary to do so. The prizes are not negotiable. If RDLE wishes to increase the prize pool during the judging it may (but shall not be obliged to) do so.
  4. Prize descriptions are illustrative and not definitive. Further details of the prize description are available within 30 days of the date of the relevant judging by sending a signed hand-written request (along with a stamped self-addressed envelope) marked with the words “Revolting Rhymers Prize Details” addressed to RDLE at 118 Seymour Place, London, W1H 1NP.
  5. In the event that any winning entry later proves to be invalid or adjudged void then RDLE may re-award the relevant prizes as it sees fit (but shall not be obliged to do so).
  6. All unclaimed prizes will lapse if not collected or retained (whether due to failure to sign for delivery or otherwise) by 16 March 2017. If any winner cannot be contacted or is not available, or has not claimed their prize by 16 March 2017, then the prize will become invalid and will not be awarded. The Promoter does not accept any responsibility if an entrant is not able to take up a prize.
  7. The Promoter will not accept responsibility for Competition entries that are not received by it, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind.
  8. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law (but not otherwise) RDLE and its agents assume no responsibility and are not liable for (i) the accuracy or otherwise of the prize descriptions or illustrations, (ii) any representation, warranty, condition or guarantee in respect of a prize (other than those warranties or conditions implied by statute and which cannot be excluded), (iii) the non-availability, loss, late or non-receipt, damage, illegibility or non-readability of a prize (iv) verifying whether the person awarded a prize is the person entitled to claim that prize, (v) any taxes, fees, charges or other costs which winners may be required to pay any time in connection with a prize.

Terms relating to use of entries and entrants’ details

  1. Competition entries will not be returned. The entry and personal data of the entrant and parent/legal guardian/teacher (i.e. name, age, email address and postal address and poem) will be held in a secure database.
  2. It is agreed that the Promoter/RDLE may, but is not required to, make any entry available on its website at roalddahl.com and/or in any other media such as e-book publication, whether now known or invented in the future. Entrants hereby grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence (with the right to grant sub-licences), for the full period of any intellectual property rights in their Competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, issue and/or communicate to the public, edit, alter, adapt, store, re-format, translate, perform, record, and/or otherwise howsoever exploit their Competition entry and any accompanying materials for any purpose and also to name any entrant whose entry is used in such a manner.
  3. An entrant that is a top ten entry of the Competition in the English language, or top four entry in the Welsh-language, agrees that the Promoter may use the entrant's name, age and town or county of residence to announce the winners of the Competition and for any other promotional or administrative purposes relating to the entry/Competition (including in the new e-book). They also agree to participate in any reasonable publicity required by the Promoter.
  4. By entering the Competition, an entrant agrees that any personal information provided with the Competition entry may be held and used by the Promoter or its agents and associates to administer the Competition. Unless it has first obtained consent, RDLE (i) will not collect more of the entrant's personal information than it needs for the purpose of administering the Competition, (ii) will only use the entrant's personal information for that purpose, which may include transferring the personal information to its associates and agents, and (iii) will not transfer the personal information outside the European Economic Area unless it is permitted to do so under the Data Protection Act 1998 (and/or any amending or replacement legislation from time to time).
  5. Any enquiries about an entrant's personal information collected for the Competition should be submitted in writing and sent by pre-paid post to RDLE at 118 Seymour Place, London, W1H 1NP marking your envelope “Data Protection Request”.

General terms

  1. All entrants accept that no right of compensation shall arise in the event of any entry becoming void at any time and/or that entry being declared ineligible.
  2. The Promoter reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the Competition.
  3. RDLE may (in its sole discretion) decline to enter into any correspondence save as otherwise stated in these Terms.
  4. The Terms are governed by English law.
